Morgan Dollar History

Of all the silver dollars struck in US history, Morgan dollars were by far the most popular. Between 1878 and 1921, hundreds of millions of Morgan silver dollars were produced.

Designed by engraver/designer George T. Morgan, the Morgan dollar remains one of the most in-demand old American coins among collectors.

Many premium quality Morgan dollars are still around today and you'll find the finest examples here at PC Coins.

Background of Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan dollar was first minted in 1878 and produced until 1904. It made a brief reappearance in 1921, never to be struck again.

The Morgan silver dollar was made at five different mints, which you find coded into each coin's mint mark:

  • Carson City Mint (CC)
  • Denver Mint (D)
  • New Orleans Mint (O)
  • San Francisco Mint (S)
  • Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark on this Morgan dollar).
